Leaving a restaurant bar tonight on the Upper West Side I stood chatting with a friend under the awning. Through the doors walks Malcolm Gladwell with a young woman. My friend had told me an hour before that I just missed a featured player from the film “Best in Show” leaving the restaurant behind me but couldn’t remember the actor’s name so didn’t bring him to my attention.
To illustrate how celebrity safari works, I leaned in and said, “That’s Malcolm Gladwell – you know ‘The Tipping Point?’” In a moment or two a couple more women left the restaurant and joined Malcolm and his companion at the curb. Each woman looked like Dr. Torres on “Grey’s Anatomy.”
My mind couldn’t help but race with “Tipping Point” references and sub-references. If I were where Malcolm Gladwell was on a Saturday night was I out at a place that was being studied as a tipping point kind of place?
If Malcolm Gladwell is out on a Saturday night with three voluptuous women is that the tipping point of what the modern intellectual male should be doing in Manhattan on a Saturday night?
Is it the tipping point to encounter Malcolm Gladwell on a sultry Saturday night in Manhattan and blog about it a short time after?
