This Sunday marks the 10th year of our celebration of a Day O’ Culture. I started DO’C in the 1990s to pursue counterprogramming on Super Bowl Sunday that successfully avoided the hyperbole and commercialism around a football game by indulging in arts and culture fun. Living in New York City, choosing which to select among the abundant offerings is like trying to choose a favorite ice cream dessert at Serendipity!
Instead of coach-potatoing we’ll be hitting the bridges, tunnels, and expressways for which we can thank urban planning titan Robert Moses. Criticized by some for carving up the City’s neighborhoods to create labyrinthine ramps to exits that accelerated white flight out of the city and over the heads of urban dwellers, three sites are collaborating for a reassessment of Robert Moses’ legacy.
My favorite venue is the Museum of the City of New York, a cultural gem at the north of Fifth Avenue’s Museum Mile, its exhibits always hit the mark. The other two venues that round out the examination of Moses are Schermerhorn Hall at Columbia University and the Queens Museum.
